Northem Norway was described by author Knut Hamsun as "the land hidden behind a hundred miles". Other writers have called it "the land of excitement" or "the land of the high flames". These expressions capture the essence of this northem land the great distances, the rugged scenery, the dancing Northern Lights of winter and the midnight sun that shines day and night in summer.
The Lofoten islands and the Nordkapp (the North Cape) in particular have atrracted tourists over the years. but it is the magnificent scenery of all northern Norway, combined with the midnight sun in summer and the wide range of outdoor activities on offer, which make this part of Norway so appealing.
People will cross the arctic circle to go fishing for monster cod in the sea and large trout in the rivers. Whale and sea safaris are on offer along with some of the best bird watching in Europe.
