One of the glorious things about driving in Norway is that every journey is one of discovery. When you jump in the car you are bound sooner or later to drive through some of the beautiful scenery Europe has to offer.

Here are some tips to make that journey a little bit easier.

Parking

Parking on main roads or on bends is not allowed. A sign that reads "All stans forbudt" means No stopping allowed. Parking metres are differentiated as follows: Yellow = one-hour, Grey = two-hour, Brown = three-hour. Parking regulations are strictly enforced.

Distances

Allow plenty of time for your journey. Roads in Norway are not built for speed and the speed limits should be strictly observed as speeding tickets can be horrendous. Your passengers will want you to take your time passing the fantastic scenery anyway!

Car Ferries

As you might expect, you will probably have to cross a fjord or two on your journey and it is most likely this will be done by ferry. With so many fjords the Norwegians have got this down to a fine art so waiting will be minimal though do expect around half an hour or so on top of the crossing time. As we have suggested before - allow plenty of time for your journey.

Documentation

Always carry your driving licence, vehicle registration document (V5), and certificate of motor insurance. If the vehicle is not registered in your name, it's a good idea to carry a letter from the registered owner giving you permission to drive.
