Trollstigen is a mountain road in Rauma, Norway (National Road 63) connecting Åndalsnes in Rauma and Valldal in Norddal. It is a popular tourist attraction due to its steep incline of 9% and eleven hairpin bends up a steep mountain side.
Trollstigen Mountain Road
Tucked deep into the mountains off the western coast of Norway lies Trollstigen Mountain Road, one of Norway's most magical attractions.
Known as "The Troll's Path," Trollstigen twists and climbs through a mountainous terrain of waterfalls, fjords, tunnels and frozen lakes. According to Norwegian folk legend, trolls roam through the mountains of Trollstigen every night, but change to stone when they are hit by sunlight each morning. Clouded in a veil of mist, their stone bodies create an unbelievable mass of cliffs and winding beauty that mesmerize both visitors and Norway natives alike.
It's rare that a road will become a treasured national tourist spot, but Trollstigen, surrounded by the massive Kongen (king), Dronningen (Queen) and Bispen (Bishop) mountains, draws thousands of visitors every year. Some come for the views; others come for the hiking and fishing; none of them leave disappointed.
What to do
Whether you're drawn to Trollstigen for the amazing views and scenery, or you're looking to explore its many paths, mountains, waterfalls and glaciers, you won't be disappointed. From biking and skiing to glacier climbing and caving, the area is a favorite among nature lovers (and action lovers) alike.
There are 21 well-prepared walks that start at specified car parks throughout the Trollstigen Mountain Road. Of these, nine are found along Road 63 between Åndalsnes and the top of the Trollstigen. If you're looking to hit a number of routes in one visit, this would be a great place to start.
For those looking for a more strenuous hike, try Tafjord Mountain (Sunnmøre), as the area offers a number of scenic hiking routes, with mountain cabins for accommodations if you choose to stay overnight.
Regardless of where you choose to hike, be sure to catch the famed Stigfossen Waterfall, which flows down the side of the mountain toward the Isterdalen Valley. A bridge adds an even more unique touch of magic to the mist and rainbows one will see while moving through it.
For those looking to enjoy the region by water, ferry rides are available between Geiranger and both Hellesylt and Valldal. The ride offers a memorable view of the majestic terrain. The rides take approximately 2 hours. For more information, visit www.fjord1.no.
