Voss

Voss and its surrounding area is seen by many as the perfect balance between a thriving modern town and tradtional living. Set in the middle of Fjord Country about 50 miles west of Bergen, Voss is on the main Bergen to Oslo railway line and easily reached as part of a motoring holiday between the east and west coast.

The town lies on the waters edge with the lake and river forming a central part of the acitvities available in the area. Rafting and river sports can be found at Voss Rafting Senter or for the more adventurous you can join an organised sea kayakking tour to see the majestic waterfalls and mountains of the Sognefjord. In addition to the myriad of opportunites to go hiking, Voss has a high quality golf course and there is also bowling, tennis and even skydiving.

Voss is also a great centre for winter sports with alpine slopes accessible directly from the town centre by cable car. A new ski centre has aslo been built at nearby Myrkdalen.

See take a glance at life in and around the town of Voss, Svein Ulvund's web site - Voss Now - contains a gigantic collection of photographs of the town and countryside taken and published daily. This is a site I visit on a regular basis when I want my "dose" of Norwegian life! A site well worth adding to you favourites.

Voss sits in a location surrounded by snow-capped mountains, forests, lakes and fast flowing white water rivers. This has led to its development as a notable center of skiing, water sports, skydiving, paragliding and other adventure sports. The area hosts the Ekstremsportveko (Extreme Sports Week) every year in the last week of June, which is regarded as the world's premier extreme sports festival. Bomoen, the local airstrip, is home to Skydive Voss, one of the largest dropzones in Norway, as well as a gliding club. The rivers provide various levels of white water, attracting kayaking, rafting and river boarding. Kite surfing and Para-bungee may been seen on lake Vangsvatnet.

Voss The ski area, to the north of the town, is accessible via a cable car, Hangursbanen from the town. There is also chair lift access from Bavallen, a short distance to the northeast of Voss. For those wanting to test their skills in Snow Survival, or spend a winter's night under the stars there are courses at Arctic Adventures.

The town's proximity to the Sognefjord and its position between Bergen and Flåm on the scenic railway have made it popular with tourists.

The Voss Museum displays several old farmsteads, including the larger than life stone statue of Lars O. Kindem. Next to the open-air part, there is a museum building with over 20 000 items from traditional farm life.
