Find The Northern Lights

The northern lights are visible across north Norway, the best region is from Tromso northwards.

The lights are visible from late October through to March/April, we recommend visiting the region in October/November or from February as in the depths of winter conditions can be poor and daylight is limited.

We have selected the best cabins from which to view the northern lights on the right of this page.

To see the northern lights you can fly direct from Gatwick on Tuesdays and Saturdays with Norwegian (www.norwegian.com)

Northern Lights Holidays in Norway
Norway provides you with an excellent opportunity to view the Aurora Borealis in its full magnificent glory.

As much of the country lies within the Arctic Circle, it places Norway in the ideal position to glimpse the Northern Lights. Norway is widely reputed to be one of the best locations in the World for this.

The Aurora Borealis is most frequent around the equinoxes. In other words, during spring and autumn. The best months to visit Northern Lights Norway would be from March to April and September to October.

They occur when the solar wind carries charged electrons which react when they enter our atmosphere and produce spectacular light displays across the night sky. To view Northern Lights, Norway's lack of light pollution means that the night sky can provide a perfect blackened backdrop for an uninterrupted display.

Usually, the display of light is green, but yellow and red lights have also been recorded. The Aurora can extend across much of the sky and it is reputed to regularly adopt a pattern in the sky which is referred to as a curtain of light.

You can experience Northern Lights Norway in a number of ways. You could travel to one of the many northern towns that offer you the chance to view the Aurora by plane, or you can take advantage of the cruises that operate from as far south as Bergen and Stavanger, and then travel on up to the more northern lands.

Norway is served by a highly reliable network of airports. This means that it is possible to travel to the more remote parts of the country fairly easily. For Northern Lights Norway, Tromsø, Northern Norway's largest town, is an ideal base for you to stay and try to catch a perfect opportunity to view the Northern Lights.

Norway also has a rail network which will take you as far as Bodø. From here, there is a good system of buses that will connect you with the cities farther north and more ideally located in the Northern Lights Norway zone.

When staying to see the Northern Lights, Norway hotels are exceptionally comfortable and of a particularly high standard. If you were looking to make your trip one that was really unforgettable, you may wish to consider staying in the Alta Ice Hotel, which is located within Norwegian Lapland area. This snowy hotel is thought to be Europe's most northern ice hotel of its kind.

When lucky enough to see the Northern Lights, Norway has a popular activity to offer which will really round off the experience perfectly. That is to ride a sledge through the snow at the same time and just to sit back and marvel at the spectacle that will be going on in the sky around you. Imagine that!
